Water, energy and VOC emissions

The main environmental impacts of Tikkurila's paint production derive from water and energy consumption, waste, and emissions into the air. 

Water

Water, which is largely sourced from a municipal water supply, is a significant ingredient in used both our products and production. As much as 79.6% of Tikkurila’s paints are water-borne (% of products). About half of the water withdrawn is used in the finished products. In production, water is used also used in cooling circuits or to clean equipment. We reuse some of this cleaning water in the paint manufacture, where this will not compromise the quality and properties of the paint. Less that 10% of water withdrawn is discharged as production waste water.

Energy 

Paint production is not very energy intensive. Energy is needed for mixing, grinding, and transferring raw materials and products, as well as for the use of support systems and tools. Much of the energy used is spent on heating and ventilation of our production facilities. 

Tikkurila regularly monitors and evaluates its energy consumption and implements projects to optimise its energy usage and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. We favour renewable energy, for example, our production facility in Sweden has been run completely on renewable energy since 2012. Realistic targets for energy sources are also being prepared for Poland and Russia; however, the availability of non-fossil energy poses a challenge in certain countries. 

VOC emissions

The manufacturing process of solvent-borne paints releases raw materials known as VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). VOC emissions are regulated by legislation and local environmental permits. Tikkurila has been able to significantly reduce VOC emissions by replacing solvent-borne products with waterborne products. In addition, our VOC emissions are controlled, for example, by keeping tanks and containers closed whenever possible to ensure good ventilation. At our Vantaa facility, VOC emissions are recaptured and incinerated. This increases CO2 emissions, but not in significant quantities.
