Vantaa Design Window showcases everyday design

Vantaa design windowIn 2012, the showroom will host a series of exhibitions titled ‘City center, residential and working environments’. The series reveals how state-of-the-art design and construction are reflected in residential environments in Vantaa. Themes include public art, sustainable environmental and urban planning, and architecture in Vantaa.

These exhibitions provide a cross section of city centre, residential and business area projects implemented and planned in Vantaa. High quality and an innovative approach to architecture and landscape planning are common to all subjects and projects in the exhibition series. The first exhibition was called "Art, design and the city", followed by "Aviapolis – the airport city", "Renewing city centers" and "Marja-Vantaa – Ring rail line".

A rag rug on asphalt

A colorful striped rag rug was painted directly onto the asphalt pavement in front of Vantaa's Design Window. This work of environmental art was designed by Marko Ahola of the City of Vantaa (Land Use and Environmental Department/ Public Utility Services Centre/ Green Area Unit). He chose bright and cheerful colors from the RAL EFFECT color card.

Prior to painting, the asphalt surface of the pavement was replaced with a new one. The new surface was washed with pressure washer and wiped with epoxy thinner. The area to be painted was primed with Tikkurila's Temafloor 150 epoxy paint. Quartz sand was scattered on the wet paint, to make the surface more coarse. The top coat used was tinted Tikkurila's semi-matte Temadur 20 polyurethane paint.

The colorful "rug" has been very well received, says Anne Kaarna from the City of Vantaa. According to her, some people choose their route so that they can walk on the painted asphalt.
