A frozen lake with fish painted in Finland’s pavilion 'Giant's Kettle'

The Finnish pavilion ‘Kirnu’ ('Giant's Kettle') being built at the Shanghai World Expo has already aroused plenty of interest. Tikkurila has supplied the paints and coatings for the steel frame of the pavilion, for all the interiors and the entrance as well as for the exterior walls of the inner courtyard. At present, finishing touches are being added to the internal facilities.

Fish - floor painting at Shanghai ExpoThe concrete floors of the first and third floors of the pavilion are being painted white. Bronze and black coloured fish designed by Finnish graphic designer Aimo Katajamäki will be painted onto their surfaces, each of which is 2–15 metres long. The patterning work is being done by 20 students from the Shanghai Academy of Art and Design, having first received training from Tikkurila. The floors will ultimately receive three coats of lacquer, in order to withstand the footsteps of millions of Expo visitors. The end result will be an image of a frozen lake through which fish can be seen.

The main colour scheme of the exhibition space on the second floor of the pavilion comes from the Finnish flag: blue and white. Tikkurila products, which are resistant to wear and cleaning, have been used to finish the interior walls and structural parts, and all ceilings have been treated with full-matt black paint. The Finnish pavilion of course has a sauna, but it is only for the use of VIP guests, not an exhibit. Tikkurila is supplying the surface treatment materials needed for the sauna.

The Shanghai World Expo is open from 1 May to 30 October 2010, and between 80 and 100 million visitors are expected to attend the exhibition. 40 companies and organisations from Finland are participating, including Tikkurila and Kemira. The Finnish EXPO 2010 project is being coordinated by Finpro.
